A 10 year anniversary / family celebration in Venice; pizza, pasta, ice-cream boats and warm weather - the perfect trip for a family with two boys. Sarah (39), an HR Manager, Rich (43) a Technical Director tell us about their family adventure in Venice with their 4 and 6 year old sons.

Where did you stay and how did you travel?

We flew from Luton and on arrival at Venice caught a bus and then took a vaporetto (or water bus as the kids called it). As we had 3 different modes of transport the boys didn't mind the journey and travelling by boat was a big hit the whole holiday. Stayed in a great apartment with 3 bedrooms and a small roof terrace, so we had our own kitchen and a lounge for chilling out after the kids were in bed. It was in a more residential area, so we got a taste of what Venice is like for the locals.

Why Venice?

We decided to take the boys to Venice for our 20th anniversary as we went pre-kids and loved it and thought we couldn't go far wrong taking them to a city with pizza, pasta, ice cream and lots of boats!

Did you manage to see the sights? What did they think?

Yes! We visited St Mark's Square on our first day and decided to have lunch there (ridiculously expensive but hey, we were on holiday!). Our youngest had a total meltdown as they put caviar on top of his sandwich. Not that amusing at the time, with lots of couples trying to have romantic lunch getting annoyed by him ruining the sound of the string quartet playing but funny to look back on! We went to the Rialto Bridge, which was much more relaxed, and sat outside a cafe watching the boats go by, having a cheeky drink in the sun. We took the boys on a gondola, which we all loved.

And your best bit?

This was probably the morning we decided to go to the beach (Venice Lido). It's not the best beach in the world but there was sand and sea to paddle in so the kids were happy. We had lunch at a cafe right on the beach and after the boys had eaten theirs we sat in the sun having a drink and watched them playing. It gave them a chance to run around and play away from the hustle and bustle and us a chance to have a few minutes of 'couple time'.

What advice would you give other families making a similar trip?

Don't make the kids walk too far! We stayed out of the centre of the city and on the first morning thought we would walk to St Mark's square and the kids would be fine with so much to see and lots of snacks. Our youngest (4) got tired earlier than expected so the romantic/relaxing stroll gazing at the sights ended up being a tad stressful!! We stayed for 3 nights but if we went back with little ones would probably stay an extra night, so they can have a bit more down time and you don't feel like you have to squeeze everything in. We didn't have a buggy but with all the bridges there I think it would be a nightmare!
